13% of Identity Theft Came From Offline Shopping

According to the 2011 Identity Fraud Survey Report, 40% of people have had their personal info misused while shopping online, while 13% became identy theft victims when they made purchases through email or phone. The ID protection company, IdentityHawk, explained that during Cyber Monday, consumers are most vulnerable when it comes to online and offline identity theft.

If a shopper is going to buy offline, it is advised that they keep their financial and personal data confidential from close friends of family members and avoid sharing passwords. The report also revealed that 1 out of 7 cases of identity thelf involved someone they personally knew.
